Giant Light Fixture Swap in Lake Stevens
The project below was something a little new for us – we’ve changed out hundreds of light fixtures however none have ever been this BIG!
This Lake Stevens house was originally built in 1989 and was designed and owned by an architect. His design aesthetic was popular at the time and definitely reflected that late 80’s and early 90’s feel. The current home owners weren’t too excited about it though and felt that it was time for a much needed change.
Normally light fixtures are an easy fix and swap but this one took some extra planning and man power. This fixture was 8 feet long and 4 feet wide and hung 12 feet below the ceiling! And it weighed approximately 500-600 pounds!
In order to get it down from the ceiling, we assembled a section of scaffolding beneath it (and over the kitchen island). The first step was to unbolt the bottom portion and then cut it up into more manageable pieces and then we removed the trim from the metal frames and unbolted them from the ceiling. At this point, we discovered something pretty scary! This behemoth of a fixture was only attached to the ceiling with a few ¼ inch bolts that were bolted to a piece of ¾ plywood that was just laying in attic! It was a very good thing that we were replacing it.
After it was all removed, we patched the ceiling, removed the remaining track lights and added 10 new recessed LED can lights as well as the new beautiful pendant sphere light.
The new kitchen island light looks to be a lot smaller than the original but it’s about 4 feet in diameter itself! We think the new fixtures looks amazing. The homeowners did a great job choosing a new light that fills up the space but doesn’t over power it!
